What is Spirit of Adventure?

Spirit of Adventure is an outdoor leadership centre based just outside Hillcrest at Shongweni Dam. By combining challenge and adventure with a strong focus on leadership training Spirit of Adventure encourages individuals to go beyond their perceived limits and accomplish much more than they ever imagined. Our activities include kayaking, abseiling, rock climbing, rafting, orienteering, obstacle courses and much more. Since 1994, we have worked with groups from schools, universities and other organizations on courses at this Reserve, the Drakensberg, the beach and other venues and we have become known for our spirit of excellence and professionalism.




What is the Leadership Year?

Every year a handful of school leavers are selected to take on the responsibility of leading clients who pass through the gates of Spirit of Adventure as Leadership Year Instructors. Those accepted into the Leadership Year will be entering into a lifestyle of independence, responsibility and self-sacrifice. This is a very real working environment and includes managing a monthly salary, dealing daily with the various needs of clients and assisting in the upkeep of an outdoor centre.


Who can be part of the Leadership Year?

The key to fulfilling our mission is our people. Spirit of Adventure therefore places great emphasis on the types of individuals selected to become instructors. Only applicants of the highest caliber will be considered for the post. This means that instructors are people with good values, strong character, leadership ability and those not participating in reckless behaviour, smoking, drinking and drugs.
